Ikon Science sponsors AAPG Imperial Barrel Award

Thursday, May 17, 2012

Geoscience technology company Ikon Science has sponsored the 2012 American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) "Imperial Barrel Award", where students are asked to look at data from somewhere in the world.

Students were allowed unlimited use of Ikon Science's "RokDoc" geoscience software during the competition.

104 Universities participated in the competition, each providing a team of 5.

The winning team was the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (UL), which looked at data from the Colville Basin of the North Slope of Alaska.

'This is the first year that UL had used RokDoc as a tool for their project," said Cathy Bishop, Geology, School of
Geosciences Lecturer, University at Lafayette.

"The team had no training on the software but picked it up easily. I was surprised how much RokDoc can do. From personal experience, I know this initial learning curve can be too great.'
