Webinar
Online

We invite you to register for our free webinar on Friday Apr 22, at 3pm London time, looking at oil and gas developments in Guyana - and whether they qualify as 'advantaged hydrocarbons', particularly from a sustainability perspective.

  • J.L. (Les) Anthony, CEO, Teyshas Energy LLC
  • Alison Redford, advisor to governments in emerging economies, and former Premier of Alberta (2011 to 2014)
  • David Bamford, director, Future Energy Partners

The development of Guyana's offshore oilfields start with a technical exploration triumph from ExxonMobil - with great understanding of source rocks and petroleum systems, followed by good use of 3D seismic and attribute (AVO) technologies, and a lot of patience, as David Bamford, CEO of Future Energy partners will explain in his introduction.

The oil will be produced to a FPSO. But what will they do with the associated gas? If it is flared, does that qualify the project as 'advantaged hydrocarbons'?

J.L. (Les) Anthony, CEO of Teyshas Energy, will share perspectives on flaring in Guyana. Mr Antony is based in Dallas. Teyshas Energy is the technical team formerly comprising Newpek, LLC, an oil and gas subsidiary of Grupo Alfa SA de CV, a Mexican multinational conglomerate. It offers consultancy services in geophysical interpretation, reservoir engineering, development engineering and commercial analysis, and also geothermal projects and carbon capture.

Alison Redford, a consultant advisor to national governments and ministries in emerging economies on regulatory reform, will share perspectives on lessons learned in the Guyana profit sharing agreement. Ms Redford is former Premier of Alberta (2011 to 2014) and Canadian Minister of Justice and Attorney General (from 2008). She provides independent advice on the creation of regulatory regimes related to climate, social and governance sustainability most recently in Pakistan, Afghanistan, South Sudan and Guyana.

Talk Description
The exploration successes offshore Guyana are based on terrific technical work.
But the FPSO-based developments raise profound questions given that there seem to be no plans for the considerable volumes of produced gas other than to flare it.
David Bamford is well known around the oil & gas industry both as an explorer and a geophysicist. He holds a Physics degree from the University of Bristol and a Ph.D in Geological Sciences from the University of Birmingham.

Since 2004, he has been a non-executive director at Tullow Oil plc, being recruited for this position especially for his exploration knowledge. He serves on the Nominations and Remuneration Committees, and was chairman of the latter, and Senior Independent Director, for 3 years prior to his retire from the board at the end of April 2014.

He joined the board of Premier Oil in May 2014.

He retired from BP plc in 2003, his last four positions being Chief Geophysicist (1990-1995), Business Unit Leader (General Manager) for first West Africa and then Norway (1995-1999), and finally Head of Exploration until 2003.

He has served on the boards of Paras Ltd, a small exploration and IS/IT consulting company in which he held 22% equity, until its sale to RPS Energy in 2008 and Welltec a/s, a Danish well engineering company, as the nominee of the private equity investor Riverside.
From 2012 to 201 he was on the board of ASX-quoted Australia Oriental Energy as a non-executive director.

He was a founder of Richmond Energy Partners, a small oil & gas research house, and several media companies that focus on the oil & gas sector, and has served as an advisor to Alliance Bernstein, Opus Executive, the Parkmead Group plc, and Kimmeridge Energy LLP. Since retiring from BP, he has undertaken asset and company valuation projects for investment banks, hedge funds and small oil companies.

Flaring in Guyana - the reality of current and forecast operations

Watch Video
Talk Description
The Guyana basin has been an area of exploration success for Exxon and partners Hess and CNOOC with an estimated resource base of 10 billion barrels of oil equivalent and 18 discoveries to date. First production began at the Liza I complex in late 2019 followed by Liza II startup in early 2022, with an additional 4-6 development areas to follow. Gas disposition remains a challenge for this project—estimated gas resources range from 8 to 15 TCF. Realizing the commercial value of the associated gas while mitigating the environmental impacts resulting from venting or flaring is a monumental challenge for the project with critical impacts on the country of Guyana and the global environment. The balance of these challenges will be discussed with respect to options for reservoir management and field developments.
Teyshas Energy, LLC is the technical team formerly comprising Newpek, LLC, a subsidiary of Grupo Alfa. Building on six years of team experience working in Mexico Rounds 0 - 2.3 and operating licenses in San Andres/Tierra Blanca and Burgos BG-02 and BG-03, Block Z-1 Offshore Peru, and participation in the Eagle Ford Shale, South Texas, we offer support for operations, business development, engineering and geology.
