Webinar
Online

At our first Ukraine webinar on Apr 28, we will hear from Ivan Karpenko, head of regional exploration at Naftogaz Group (state-owned NOC) - leading a team of explorers looking for hydrocarbons in frontier deep-water Black sea and mature plays in Dnieper-Donets basin.

Ukraine has three major petroleum-rich regions - the Dniepr-Donets Basin, the offshore Black Sea, and the Carpathians. Geological settings vary widely in Ukraine - multiple conventional and unconventional plays, thermogenic and biogenic from shallow to ultra-deep.

This webinar is timed to come a few weeks before the international Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC 2023) in London on June 21-22. This is organised jointly by the governments of UK and Ukraine.

Comment from David Bamford:

In the past, several oil & gas Majors have either entered Ukraine – Shell and Chevron for example – or seriously thought about it – as BP did in the first couple of years of the 21st Century. I was coming up to retirement then but I remember we did a great deal of technical and commercial work but eventually chose not to proceed because the economics didn’t ‘work’ (which may be code for not figuring out how to re-patriate dollars from Ukraine to the UK!).

Now things are different.

We hope that we are not too far from the day when Russian troops leave Ukraine. Then there will need to be massive efforts to rebuild. It will help Ukraine greatly if it is able to develop its own hydrocarbon resources, preferably tied with CO2 sequestration projects.

And we can ask the question: at a minimum does Ukraine have the reserves and prospective resources to reconstruct itself in the short term or could it in fact become a major supplier of hydrocarbons, especially gas, to the rest of Europe?
