The Geological Society

Our Finding Petroleum "Opportunities in the Eastern Mediterranean" event on Sept 20 includes talks from Energean Oil and Gas, PGS, TGS and MacGeology.

Laura Hardiman, Development manager with Energean Oil and Gas, will give an overview on Energean's activities in the Eastern Med. Energean must be the Eastern Med's most interesting oil and gas company, with 13 licences, including producing assets in Greece, major development and exploration assets offshore Israel and exploration acreage comprised of two exploration licenses in Western Greece, and two blocks offshore Montenegro. Energean actively assesses further opportunities in the Mediterranean region.

Mark Hamilton, senior geophysicist with PGS, will give a review of exploration opportunities and opportunity in the eastern Med. Karyna Rodriguez, VP Geoscience with TGS, will give a grand tour of post-Zohr Mediterranean Prospectivity.

Duncan Macgregor of Macgeology will give a talk on Biogenic Gas Systems of the Eastern Mediterranean. This will include the physical and biological models applicable to biogenic gas generation, trapping and preservation with reference to recent discoveries in the Eastern Mediterranean, including the Zohr and Tamar fields. Mr Macgregor has 35 years experience in new venture and exploration geology, including 20 years with BP. He has specific expertise in the African plate, including the Eastern Mediterranean.

Limited seats still available for £50.

Biogenic Gas Systems of the Eastern Mediterranean

Watch Video     View PDF
Talk Description
This century has seen a surge in biogenic gas discoveries worldwide, particularly in deepwater settings, with fields having been found of much larger scale and therefore of much greater commercial significance than previously found.

This talk reviews and revises the physical and biological models applicable to biogenic gas generation, trapping and preservation with reference to recent discoveries in the Eastern Mediterranean, including the Zohr and Tamar fields.

Key success factors are shown to contrast strongly with those for exploration for thermogenic petroleum and include: low seabed temperature and high seabed pressure, low geothermal gradient, a supply of type iii kerogen, high sedimentation rate, early seal compaction and perhaps most crucially of all, syn-sedimentary trap formation. Comparison can be made of these factors between the Zohr and Tamar systems and predicted systems in frontier regions such as Lebanon and Greece.

A key issue affecting field size and therefore commerciality is the often complex relationship between generation and trap formation, which controls degree of trap fill, including the effects of the Messinian lowstand. However, this has the upside that trap volume remains available for thermogenic petroleum generated from deeper source rocks.

The interplay between biogenic and thermogenic systems may thus be a strong control on the commerciality of new fields, which are generally likely to be smaller than the giants found to date.

The fields and discoveries of the Eastern Mediterranean. The changing reserves story

Watch Video    View PDF
Talk Description
With a starting point of the 2019 BP Statistical Review entries for Mediterranean countries (reserves, production etc), the talk will review the current and near-future evolution of hydrocarbon reserves in the Eastern Mediterranean.

We will briefly review some of the trends and highlights of hydrocarbon exploration in the region. Key future drilling activity, licensing round activity , project developments and LNG progress.

With over 150 fields and discoveries in the Eastern Mediterranean region alone, some key findings are addressed.

TROVE characterises and collates all the field, discovery and prospects based on open-source data, allowing rapid search and analysis of this rapidly-evolving and prolific hydrocarbon province.
Mike Cooper is Managing Director at 1st Subsurface, a multidisciplinary consultancy specialising in subsurface management, exploration and asset strategy. 1st Subsurface supplies the TROVE oil and gas industry databases. These databases contain detailed geoscience & technical data on every field, discovery and open-source prospect for the basins covered.
