“
Seismic is King!”…………………but are there any Princes?
Seismic technology has dominated geoscience, and thus the Exploration and Exploitation businesses, throughout my career in oil & gas. And within it there continues to be remarkable innovation, led by companies such as PGS.
However, from the vast wave spectrum known to us from physics, it would be strange perhaps if sound waves were absolutely the only ones that offer us the necessary lateral and vertical resolution. Of course it is clear as soon as you dig into sonic wave theory why this resolution triumphs, over potential field measurements for example, with perhaps the only limitation being that you do have to be on the earth’s surface to make it work………………..
Thus, in addition to reviewing seismic innovation, we thought we would devote some of this event to examining technologies based on innovative physics or airborne/satellite deployment (or both).
Note: This event continues from our past 'New Geophysical Technologies' event held in

David Bamford is well known around the oil & gas industry both as an explorer and a geophysicist. He holds a Physics degree from the University of Bristol and a Ph.D in Geological Sciences from the University of Birmingham.
Since 2004, he has been a non-executive director at Tullow Oil plc, being recruited for this position especially for his exploration knowledge. He serves on the Nominations and Remuneration Committees, and was chairman of the latter, and Senior Independent Director, for 3 years prior to his retire from the board at the end of April 2014.
He was on the board of Premier Oil from May 2014 to May 2016.
He retired from BP plc in 2003, his last four positions being Chief Geophysicist (1990-1995), Business Unit Leader (General Manager) for first West Africa and then Norway (1995-1999), and finally Head of Exploration until 2003.
He has served on the boards of Paras Ltd, a small exploration and IS/IT consulting company in which he held 22% equity, until its sale to RPS Energy in 2008 and Welltec a/s, a Danish well engineering company, as the nominee of the private equity investor Riverside.
From 2012 to 201 he was on the board of ASX-quoted Australia Oriental Energy as a non-executive director.
He was a founder of Richmond Energy Partners, a small oil & gas research house, and several media companies that focus on the oil & gas sector, and has served as an advisor to Alliance Bernstein, Opus Executive, the Parkmead Group plc, and Kimmeridge Energy LLP. Since retiring from BP, he has undertaken asset and company valuation projects for investment banks, hedge funds and small oil companies.

Talk Description - From “Dad” Joiner (who discovered the East Texas field in the 1930s) to thermal imaging - A range of scientific methods which can theoretically be used to search for petroleum deposits - Commercial exploration tools built on these scientific methods – and how these tools are currently being applied - Possible lessons for improving the currently low rate of discovered volumes |
Robert has previously been involved in marketing non-seismic exploration technology to international E&Ps, and he is currently focused upon executive search and executive coaching for senior management at natural resources and other companies. His career spans the private, public and civil service sectors. He studied the History of Science in his degree.

Talk Description Inverse problems utilize model parameters to infer information about the observable data. We present two advanced methods of inversion. The first utilizes advanced stabilization methods in the inversion to generate high resolution and stable Earth models through the process of Full Waveform Inversion. Once an accurate model has been generated we demonstrate the use of wave equation reflectivity inversion to compensate for acquisition related illumination and amplitude variation; mitigating uncertainty in imaging. |
Tony has over 25 years of experience gained within the seismic discipline, with roles covering both data acquisition and processing, working for both research organisations and contractors. The last 17 years have been focussed on the supervision of depth imaging projects from the major marine oil provinces throughout the world. His current position as Area Geophysicist at PGS involves supporting the Imaging & Engineering department within the EAME region.

Talk Description - Savings in time and cost due to more efficient in-field operation, reduced number of vessel sail lines for any given survey area - What improvement in overall data quality can we expect from increased trace density? - Why traditional constraints on inline shot interval vs record length vs vessel speed have been removed due to use of continuous recording systems and processing breakthroughs in de-blending overlapping shot data - Achieving the desired 3D spatial sampling using more than two sources in the cross line direction rather than a large number of more closely spaced streamers |
Phil has over 32 years of experience in the field of marine geophysics. During that time he has held several senior level technical positions in marine seismic data acquisition at Western Geophysical, WesternGeco, Veritas DGC, and CGGVeritas. Prior to joining Polarcus in December of 2008, Phil held the position of Geophysical Manager for CGGVeritas' marine acquisition product line. Duncan Irving is the Oil & Gas Consulting Team Lead, EMEA & APAC with Teradata. Duncan joined Teradata from the University of Manchester where he instructed in geophysical interpretation and geocomputational methods for the last seven years. He was involved in consulting and research projects involving user interactions with massive subsurface datasets and more general upstream data management, and he continues to maintain research links as an honorary lecturer. One long term project was with Teradata and he drove the development of Teradata's capabilities in the Upstream Oil and Gas area. This time provided him with a deep understanding of the capabilities of Teradata and how they can best be used in the petroleum industry. He is a geophysicist and also has a PhD in glacial geophysics and geotechnical engineering (why frozen ground moves faster during climate warming and how this affects infrastructure). Duncan lives in the hills outside Manchester with his wife and three children. He is a mountaineer, fell runner and is a card-carrying member of the CAMpaign for Real Ale.
