The Geological Society

This forum on Jan 24th explored ways to make oil and gas digital technology more oriented around the experts which use it - and by doing so create many business opportunities. The organisation gets better software and better results - and there can also be many opportunities for domain experts and software developers making much more useful software.

We define 'expert-centric' software as software designed specifically around the interests of the experts who are going to use it. In the way that cars are designed around their drivers, and mainstream software and electronics is desigend around its customers.

Developing software that understands the real world

Watch Video    View PDF
Talk Description
- Software today is mostly geared towards developing quick and cost efficient solutions
- Less attention is given to teaching computers about the world they will be operating in
- But for software to be useful to expert workers - such as geologists, drilling engineers, production engineers, facilities engineers - the software needs to understand the world they work in

Ulysses Systems is a software company specializing in the delivery of actionable information.

Providing experts with an integrated view of safety data from all sources: sensors, software and qualitative factors

Watch Video    View PDF
Talk Description

  • Safety managers need to ensure safety barriers are intact – but a safety barrier is just a concept made up of processes, sensors and alerts, not a real thing.
  • How to provide expert safety managers with a single view of the safety situation, which they can use to drill down and find what they need

Infoscience Technologies Ltd

Show me something I don't already know: Making Oil and Gas technical information more engaging during search for subject matter experts.

Watch Video
Talk Description

  • Share results of research with over 50 petroleum engineers in 30 organizations using the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) content. What algorithms and visual analytics showed a greater propensity to suggest the unexpected, insightful and valuable?
  • Discuss various techniques which could nudge search tools from just time savers - meeting an existing need - to creative 'assistants'; stimulating new needs.

Paul is a Geoscientist and Computer Scientist who has worked on search deployments in organizations for the past three decades. He is founder of Tech Start-up Infoscience Technologies Ltd based in Oxford, that licenses exploration geoscience text mining algorithms. He is also on the Board of the non-profit GeoscienceWorld based in Washington DC and is Visiting Professor of Information Science & Technology at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen. He has published numerous academic peer reviewed papers on enterprise search and text analytics in business. Links and further research found at:
