The Middle East is where the oil is, but is not necessarily where the business opportunities are, and the business opportunities may only be for the largest companies. So conventional wisdom goes. We’ll look at how this might be wrong – looking particularly around the Zagros, Lebanon and Egypt.

Jo is a director and carbonate specialist at Cambridge Carbonates Ltd.

Following her PhD research in carbonates at Durham University, Jo’s industry career started in 1998 at Enterprise Oil where for 5 years she worked in exploration, production and operations. Her career then took her to Norway, where she was activity leader in Statoil’s carbonate exploration research programme.

Jo joined Cambridge Carbonates Ltd in 2004, and became a director of the company a year later. She works as a consultant carbonate geologist, with recent focus on the Middle East, SE Asia, Barents Sea, the Adriatic, fractured carbonate reservoirs and hydrothermal dolomites. She has a breadth of experience ranging from new ventures and exploration work, reservoir characterisation projects, seismic expression of carbonates, fieldwork, and analysing large datasets for global trends.

Talk Description
The onshore and offshore environments in the Middle East provide an ideal stage for satellite remote sensing for oil exploration. This presentation will explore some of the techniques which can be employed in the region for accurate geological mapping and hydrocarbon seepage detention with examples from the Zagros, Red Sea, Eastern Mediterranean and the Arabian Gulf
Michael joined NPA Satellite Mapping as a Remote Sensing Geologist in 2004, before previously working briefly in the gold exploration business. He has a degree in Geology and a masters in Remote sensing and has been in the role as Oil and Gas manager at NPA since 2016.
