Full Agenda

Tuesday, December 4, 2012
London
Hallam Conference Centre

This event is for oil company IT, IS and data managers who want to keep updated about the latest techniques to keep IT under control and easier to manage in their companies, keep users happy, IT costs down, and leave the office by 5pm.

There is still a large gap between promise and delivery with digital technology in the oil and gas industry. Where is digital technology failing to make its users delighted - and how can this gap can be closed?

Meanwhile with cloud technology, tablet computers, faster communications offshore, high performance data management systems and software tools, people in the oil and gas industry have some great tools to help collaboration, and their expectations are rising even faster.

Despite having all of these tools, people don't seem to be collaborating as closely as companies would like - particularly between departments - and often lack a common sense of proportionality, or how many decimal places a number needs to have!

Register to reserve your place now!

Working with subsurface disciplines and proportionality

Talk Description
An Operations Geologist is often described as being a "Jack of all trades, master of none". I bring together the work of Petrophysicists, Geologists, Reservoir Engineers and Drillers. The ability to co-ordinate and communicate between these disciplines is essential.

I am involved in well planning (exploration, appraisal and development), handling and interpreting data during the drilling phase and compiling and QC-ing various end of well reports.

Naturally, a great proportion of the data I deal with is in digital form - although not actually a "number cruncher" myself. (I love that expression, "A picture is worth a thousand words").

One thing I have to deal with, is the sense of scale or proportionality which is often not fully appreciated by some team members!

In our modern era we have fantastic computing power in terms of data storage and processing speed, however, what can be overlooked is the degree of accuracy or detail required when meeting objectives.

At what data frequency and to how many decimal places is adequate for the task in hand! Sometimes we "Can't see the wood for the trees" !

Centralising G&G applications in the datacentre

Talk Description
One of the biggest IT problems that the E&P industry must tackle is dealing with the huge amount of data that geoscience applications generate. ISN Solutions can help companies centralise, manage and provide remote access to G&G applications by moving the information to the data centre. In that way, companies can lower total cost of ownership, streamline administration, reduce data duplication, improve security and provide geoscientists with capabilities to work anywhere at any time. In this presentation we present results of our research in delivering these applications remotely.
Michael Papalabrou is a Licensed Electrical Engineer with long experience in the IT industry, including running his own consultancy. He has many years'
experience of architecture and management of large scale IT projects. He has authored and implemented complex technical studies for demanding environments, has participated in EC research projects and published scientific papers. His role as Solution Architect at ISN Solutions focuses on providing complete ICT solutions to the oil and gas industry.

(local digital oilfield heroes) - spares data management on the cloud - improving efficiency and data sharing

Talk Description
Why a cloud data solution reigns over spreadsheets,

Experience with offshore North Sea oil and gas companies, moving the management of spares data onto the cloud (with a system such as sparesFinder’s “Spearhead”), asset owners, EPCs and suppliers can collaborate much more easily, improving efficiency and reducing risk. You can integrate the system with other business applications (such as ERP) and the benefits are applicable both to greenfield and brownfield projects
David co-founded sparesFinder Ltd in 1998. He is a Cambridge-trained engineer, sponsored by the Royal Navy. In active service he managed 40 aircraft-carrier-based engineering staff and subsequently became responsible for formulating Fleet Air Arm Logistics policy in the Ministry of Defence. After leaving the RN he worked at Citibank for 6 years, firstly as an IT project manager and then as a derivatives trader specializing in European Government Bond Options based in Frankfurt and London.

Since founding sparesFinder, David has led the development of a series of innovative software tools to provide rapid visibility and analytics of engineering inventory across multiple systems, and to create a controlled environment in which to clean and manage master data.

Used daily in over 90 countries by some of the world's best known companies, these fully hosted, easy to use tools are immediately available to sparesFinder’s customers via a web browser, saving them time, money and hassle.

(local digital oilfield heroes) Get Smarter; Build an Analytics Laboratory

Talk Description
With the explosion in the use of intelligent, connected devices and with technology increasingly providing cost effective data collection and storage; data volumes are now growing exponentially. This trend can be seen in all industry sectors, with the escalation driven by the common promise of being able to understand key behaviours better than the competition. The data may relate to the shopping habits of retail customers, the propensity of a reservoir to relinquish its oil or of a fleet of trains to stay healthy. The objective is the same; use big data to better understand your ‘asset’ and the market.

Benefit only comes from making better decisions and improved operations and these decisions need to be informed by unlocking insight from the data, however, clear examples of concrete benefit remain thin on the ground. All too often, the mechanics of managing the data volumes overwhelm any efforts to extract insight and align it to business need and the cost of managing the data is rising unchecked.

The Analytics Laboratory approach overcomes these shortcoming by focusing first on the decisions that need to be made, and second, on the analytics that is required to extract insight to inform those decisions.
Bas Hendriksen joined Tessella as Business Development Manager in early 2012. Over the past 30 years of his international career, Bas has been a front runner in ensuring information technology supports step change improvements in business performance. He holds a MSc in Civil Engineering (Hydrology, TU-Delft) and an MBA degree from Nijenrode University.

(local digital oilfield heroes) Virtual oil platforms for language training used by Tengiz Chevroil and Japex

Talk Description
Languagelab has developed a series of online 3D virtual oil platforms for language and technical training in the oil and gas industry, which is currently being used by companies such as Tengiz Chevroil and Japex.

We provide immersive, contextual, oil and gas specific English language training with native English speaking industry professionals.

Our training platform also allows students to learn basic offshore skills, safety and evacuation training and specific technical training in a safe, realistic environment.

Using a headset and microphone, students from around the world can learn together. This reduces the need for costly and time intensive face to face methods of training. We are unique in the fact that all of our teachers are both native speakers and have specific industry experience, and we are the only online service who can offer such a high level of immersion into the environment in question.

Our environment drives uniquely high levels of engagement - 60% of our Oil and Gas English learners spend on average over 9 hours a month studying with us. This in turn leads to faster progress, with students improving on average one English level after just 30 hours of study.
Nathalie's Oil and Gas career started with her teaching English to refugees in London which in turn led her to Languagelab's online teaching platform. At Languagelab she focused on English for Specific Purposes training, leading her to her current role as Oil and Gas course coordinator.

Combining her knowledge of virtual world technology and English teaching, Nathalie liaises with technical experts from Tengiz Chevroil as well as a number of highly qualified individuals in the oil and gas sector to develop specialised content and teaching materials for Languagelab's oil and gas programme.

She is also a qualified virtual world technology trainer and recruits, screens and trains Languagelab's specialised Oil and Gas teachers to ensure they are suited to teaching on a virtual platform.
