Dr Mark Ireland
Mark is a Lecturer in Energy Geosciences at Newcastle University.
He is a geoscientist by training with a PhD from Durham University.
He has extensive experience of the interpretation of geophysical data and over 8 years’ experience in the upstream oil and gas industry, both onshore and offshore, with bp.
In 2019 he was appointed to his current role where his research spans the broad area of geoenergy, and focuses on the interpretation and modelling of subsurface data.
Currently Mark is involved in a variety of geoenergy research projects including: deep closed loop geothermal systems; geophysical exploration methods for geothermal; heat flow modelling; geological storage of hydrogen; repurposing oil and gas infrastructure and geological disposal of radioactive waste.
His research is funded through UKRI, collaborations with local and regional stakeholders and industry partners across the energy sector. He is a fellow of the Geological Society and a member of the Energy Group Committee.
