Upstream Tech 2014
...holding a tin cup below a Niagara Falls of data!
0
Friday, May 23, 2014, London, Royal Society of Chemistry
Technology now offers us a huge diversity of data, from satellites (SAR, gravity), from planes (conventional gravity and magnetics, and especially FTG), all sorts of seismic - 3D and 3C, 4D/Permanent Reservoir Monitoring, passive seismic, CSEM, 24/7 fibre optic measurements along complete well bores, and so on and so forth.
However, our ability to acquire such multi-measurements has completely outpaced our abilities firstly to integrate these diverse data sets and then to interpret them in a 'joined up' way. In fact, only half tongue in cheek, I have recommended that the most useful integration method is that using lots of tracing paper and an old-fashioned light table! Back to the 1980s!
We are "holding a tin cup below a Niagara Falls of data!"
This one day event addresses the issues of integration and interpretation in turn, and I hope that at the end of the day, we will have perceived a way forward, if dimly!
Please come and join us.

Oliver Morris - Technical Manager - Landmark Exploration Insights
Solving the 'big data' problem for basins and plays
Talk Description. Within this presentation different types of data, generally grouped under ‘Big’ and ‘Small’ will be discussed and how they are incorporated into the Neftex Earth Model suite of products. The right skills needed to become a data scientist will be explored along with various skill, technology and legal hurdles that we face in managing and integrating data at Neftex. We shall explorer climate modelling and climate proxies through conventional ‘Small’ data and ‘Big’ data techniques and evaluate their benefits and limitations. Concluding with some forward plans on how to integrate data.
Oliver Morris, is a member of the executive committee at Neftex Petroleum Consultants Limited, in Abingdon, UK where he leads the Technical Services team. Since joining Neftex over six years ago, he has been responsible for product delivery to a wide range of oil and gas companies globally. He also manages in-house database development. Previously, he worked for an Environmental Engineering company working on analytical databases and GIS modelling. He is a graduate of Environmental Science from Lancaster University.
Landmark Exploration Insights Landmark Exploration Insights (formerly Neftex), is a product family within Landmark, a business line of Halliburton. We specialise in the collation, integrations and interpretation of large geoscience dataset and the delivery of these as subsurface models. We are recognised as industry leaders in the provision of web-based sequence stratigraphic products and their global application. Our integrated global geological database - the Neftex Earth Model delivers data, knowledge and insight to help our clients better understand geological risk in their exploration and investment activities.

Michael Kemper - Director, Research Innovation & Development - Ikon Science
Gridless Geomodelling
Talk Description. In this presentation we present gridless geomodelling, or at worst, just-in-time gridding. Virtually all geomodelling tools grid, or mesh, the subsurface, and these models are so-called geocellular. We all know that for dynamic flow modelling some (finite element/volume) mesh is required – we call that a flow simulator. But why grid a static geological model? We shall explore when gridding is indeed needed, and when not. We shall also point out the significant advantages of geomodelling without an a priori grid. Finally we shall show that gridless geomodelling has some significant rewards for close-the-loop 4D reservoir monitoring workflows.

David M Roberts - Consultant - 3-DMR
Visualisation and Visual Integration 2014
Talk Description. This presentation comprises an overview of the use of visualisation in the oil industry. It includes examples of both the technical and business value of visualisation, and also many examples of visual integration (sometimes referred to as co-visualisation) using both exploration and development datasets. Visual integration is a powerful technique which the author believes is still vastly under-utilised in the oil industry. Visualisation and visual integration examples will be shown which have been contributed by several oil companies and all the major geoscience software vendors.
David M Roberts worked for BP Exploration for 31 years as a geophysicist and was the companies global visualisation champion for the last 10 years of his time with the company. Dave retired from BP in 2005 and has been happily consulting in the area of visualisation, visual integration and very fast 3D seismic interpretation since then. His business is called 3-DMR and he has clients all over the world.

The Power of 4D Data Integration and Analysis in Reservoir Management
Talk Description. Co-visualization and analysis of 4D multidisciplinary data should be standard practice in our industry. The tools exist and this talk aims to show, using a live demonstration, the value of integrating all available data, analyzing the relationships between disparate data sets and highlighting some less common data types such as microseismic and lidar. For Reservoir Management it is critical that not only can all relevant data be visualized at any point in time but also that the relationships between datasets can be quantified and used in planning.
Dynamic Graphics Dynamic Graphics, Inc. partners with clients to solve spatial analysis problems in the petroleum, environmental, and earth-related sciences. Over the past four decades, we have been the premier provider of geospatial solutions with our innovative, easy-to-use software and outstanding support services.

20 million B.C. to 2014 Human collaboration – What’s new?
Talk Description. That due to millions of years of evolution human collaboration is best delivered by a face to face meeting with cognitive artefacts. Secondly that the closer the human machine collaborative interface emulates a real meeting with cognitive artefacts the better the cognition. The better the cognition the better the innovation and the more likely the avoidance of mis-communication and consequent error.
cereno Real-time collaboration with nuVa for the digital oilfield
cereno, a specialist in communications, business conferencing and advanced collaboration technologies, is delighted to offer its flagship collaboration technology solution nuVa.
Collaborative working is essential in today's business world to ensure rapid flow of ideas and understanding. The traditional meeting is time-consuming, expensive, and is fast becoming environmentally unacceptable.
cereno's nuVa collaboration solution builds on people's natural way of working. nuVa's high quality audio/video communications and intuitive shared workspace allow multiple users to work together on documents and applications in real-time, irrespective of their geographical location. It incorporates a familiar pen interface for annotating and a standard keyboard for typing.
nuVa can also be used over Inmarsat BGAN and bandwidths as low as 64kbps for multi-party secure collaborations. In remote or hostile environments e.g. on an offshore oil platform, often the operations are highly complex. If the technology fails, costs may be incredibly high. nuVa helps to identify the issue far more quickly and accurately through its unique collaboration environment. Experts located globally can be connected using nuVa to fix and make decisions about a high cost problem, providing a ROI in hours.
