The Caribbean......
Undoubtedly, this region has arrived as a key area for future oil and gas exploration.
The discovery of billions of barrels of oil offshore Guyana by ExxonMobil and partners since 2015 has focused the attention of the geological community on the eastern boundary of the Caribbean and South American tectonic plates.
And the recent announcement by EcoPetrol of promising gas discoveries offshore Colombia defines a ‘complete set’ along the southern margin of the Caribbean – Colombia=>Venezuela=>Trinidad=>Guyana.
Which brings us to two questions:
What about the western side of the Caribbean, from Nicaragua round to Jamaica?
And could there be ‘trendology’ from Guyana into the eastern side, into the Tobago Basin and perhaps the Barbados Accretionary Prism (as conjectured in AAPG Memoir 123)?
Our webinar will focus on these two questions!!
The webinar is at 1pm UK time and lasts one hour

Chris Matchette-Downes - founder - CaribX
Basins across an active transform margin, western Caribbean
Talk Description. ....from Jamaica round to Nicaragua
CaribX has been active in this region since 2009 and its predecessor MDOIL since 2003.
Chortis is a major continental tectonic block in the Western Caribbean. Its offshore component stretches some 750 kms. between the coasts of Honduras and Nicaragua to western Jamaica. Some 50 wells were drilled across this terrain up to the early 1980’s with 73% of the wells recording hydrocarbon shows, 5 wells flowed hydrocarbons with several significant source rock penetrations.

In this short presentation I will walk through the basins describing the oils, source rocks and reservoirs of this lightly explored part of the Caribbean.
Chris has been in the upstream business for over 30 years, including time with BP, BG and more recently Black Marlin Energy. A petroleum geochemist, Chris is well-respected for work done in both East Africa and in the greater Caribbean region and has undertaken several geoscientific reviews of the region since 2003. He was a founder of Black Marlin which was sold in 2010 for 100 + mln USD. He is a renowned expert and often speaks at international conferences and seminars on the subject of oil and gas exploration. In addition, he has a track record of finding and securing commercial deals. MSc., BSc., CGeol
CaribX CaribX is a multi-disciplinary oil and gas exploration company with a unique insight into the petroleum geology of the Caribbean and Central America gained from over a decaderesearch and comparison with global analogues.
CaribX is the only Caribbean and Central American specialist exploration company. We are based in London with representatives in Managua, Tegucigalpa, Kingston, Port of Spain, Houston and Singapore. CaribX was incorporated with the mission to:
1. Build on its unique understanding of the petroleum potential of the Caribbean & Central American region through detailed petroleum geological study, original thinking and interpretation;
2. Select the most prospective areas and attract financial and industry partners;
3. Safely and responsibly develop this potential in partnership with the countries in which we operate.
The greater Caribbean region remains lightly explored despite the nearby presence of petroleum systems that have resulted in the massive oil and gas accumulations in Venezuela, Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago, Mexico and the US Gulf of Mexico.
CaribX's dedicated technical and management team has long recognised the region's potential. Our work continues to reduce exploration risk via the identification of new petroleum source regimes and associated play trends leading to an increased chance of discovering indigenous petroleum resources.

Jeniffer Masi - Chief Geoscientist - Geoex MCG
South-Eastern Caribbean Exploration Opportunities
Talk Description. .During 2018 and 2019, Geoex MCG acquired the Caribbean Atlantic Margin Deep Imaging seismic survey (CAMDI). This survey consists of 16,443 km MC2D long offset and deep records seismic data. This transnational survey continuously covers acreage across the maritime borders of Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago, Grenada, and St. Vincent. The survey was originally designed in two grids. The Regional Grid is meant to provide a better understanding of the regional tectonic framework of the different basins along the Southeastern Caribbean and Western Atlantic Margin of Northeast South America. The Detailed Grid, offshore Trinidad & Tobago, and Grenada, is designed to provide more detail, to outline potential prospects and tying the producing areas in Trinidad & Tobago to the underexplored deeper part of the Tobago Trough. The CAMDI survey can be combined with Barbados Survey acquired in 2012/2013 by Geoex MCG, to outline potential prospects in Barbados. The Barbados Survey is comprising 6,837 km of long-offset 2D seismic data over a 14 x 14 km and 7 x 7 km prospect grid, covering the Barbados Trough, the Tobago Basin and crosses the Barbados Ridge. All the components for successful exploration are present offshore Southeastern Caribbean, Including several trapping configurations: channels, rollover structures and anticlines. An integrated interpretation of both CAMDI and Barbados MC2D surveys have led to the identification of multiple prospects. These prospects are expected to be charged by the La Luna formation (or its regional equivalent). Structural and stratigraphic traps have been mapped out and Direct Hydrocarbon Indicators (DHI’s) can be observed in connection with many of these traps.
The Southeastern Caribbean area is an excellent exploration opportunity, with only a few exploration wells are drilled in this vast untested area. Several world class leads have been identified with the using both Geoex MCG surveys: CAMDI and Barbados. Good quality offshore reservoirs appear in the data, optimizing the ‘below-ground risk’. Meanwhile, regional Governments have created an exploration environment optimizing the ‘above-ground risk’.
The Government of Barbados recently announced the schedule for their Offshore Licensing round. In addition, the Government of Trinidad & Tobago has recently also published the expected blocks on offer for Competitive Bidding in Q4 2022.
Geoex MCG About Geoex MCG.... We are a multi-disciplinary team of experts in geoscience, interpretation, operations and marketing with an intimate knowledge of the energy industry.
The core of our activities lies in identifying attractive areas for the exploration of natural energy resources and the design of geoscientific surveys. We procure data suitable for oil & gas exploration, CCUS monitoring, natural hydrogen, solar farms, and more. Contact us for opportunities.
We serve these energy value chains by developing 2D, 3D and hybrid surveys, including data reprocessing, data conditioning and project management. Moreover, we market and sell geophysical data on behalf of energy companies, geophysical contractors and governmental authorities.
Our portfolio of products spans Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, and the Asia Pacific.
