Opportunities in Mature Provinces and Super Basins

How can we make a step change in improving investability of older fields? 0

Wednesday, February 21, 2018, London, The Geological Society

They say the best place to find oil is an oilfield. We'll be exploring some new ideas how to do this at our mature fields forum on February 21, with talks from Kimmeridge Energy, Landmark Exploration Insights (Halliburton, formerly Neftex), investment banking firm Stifel (Chris Wheaton) and Rob Gill, formerly EAME business development manager with Advisian Worley Parsons.

Mature Provinces around the world can offer significant opportunities for innovative companies in a low oil or gas price world - much infrastructure has already been built and the location of the great majority of resources/reserves is known.

Topics we'll cover include the 'superbasins' concept (a basin which has produced 5bn boe and has about 5bn boe left, with typically multiple source rocks, such as the Permian Basin, Northwest German Basin, and more, see more here) and why that might be useful; Kimmeridge Energy's plans for the Permian and beyond, ideas from an investor's perspective on how to improve economic recovery from the North Sea, and ideas about developing satellite fields, with subsea tiebacks and standardised minimum facilities platforms.

David Bamford - Director - Finding Petroleum

Welcome

Talk Description.
Welcome and introduction

David Bamford is well known around the oil & gas industry both as an explorer and a geophysicist. He holds a Physics degree from the University of Bristol and a Ph.D in Geological Sciences from the University of Birmingham.

Since 2004, he has been a non-executive director at Tullow Oil plc, being recruited for this position especially for his exploration knowledge. He serves on the Nominations and Remuneration Committees, and was chairman of the latter, and Senior Independent Director, for 3 years prior to his retire from the board at the end of April 2014.

He was on the board of Premier Oil from May 2014 to May 2016.

He retired from BP plc in 2003, his last four positions being Chief Geophysicist (1990-1995), Business Unit Leader (General Manager) for first West Africa and then Norway (1995-1999), and finally Head of Exploration until 2003.

He has served on the boards of Paras Ltd, a small exploration and IS/IT consulting company in which he held 22% equity, until its sale to RPS Energy in 2008 and Welltec a/s, a Danish well engineering company, as the nominee of the private equity investor Riverside.

From 2012 to 201 he was on the board of ASX-quoted Australia Oriental Energy as a non-executive director.

He was a founder of Richmond Energy Partners, a small oil & gas research house, and several media companies that focus on the oil & gas sector, and has served as an advisor to Alliance Bernstein, Opus Executive, the Parkmead Group plc, and Kimmeridge Energy LLP. Since retiring from BP, he has undertaken asset and company valuation projects for investment banks, hedge funds and small oil companies.

Illuminating the Geology of Super Basins: The Next Big Thing for Exploration?

Talk Description.
The recently publicized concept of “Super Basins” provides geologists with an exciting opportunity for exploiting hydrocarbons in low risk settings where topside infrastructure is well established and the subsurface is known to contain (often multiple) prolific petroleum systems. The main differentiator between Super Basins and their less hydrocarbon-rich counterparts is a proven production of >5BBOE and a remaining recoverable resource of >5BBOE. Across the globe, c. 25 Super Basins have been identified. By its very definition, the Super Basin concept relies heavily on what is known in the subsurface today and is extremely beneficial at identifying short-term cycle production opportunities. However, as a concept, the term Super Basin reveals little about the heterogeneous nature of the known petroleum systems or whether any potential for new exploration opportunities of significance exists. In particular, are there new plays to be exploited? And if so what are they and what are the likely resources associated with them?

We will discuss how an integrated, holistic process of geological evaluation reveals the true anatomy of the petroleum systems in these basins. This demonstrates that in these exceptional basins, the petroleum systems within them can be far from simple and often have variable levels of exploration associated with them. Furthermore, the nature of generation, dispersal and capture of hydrocarbon change is also illuminated with diffusive and more focused charge end-members being clearly recognized. This differentiation of Super Basins provides a realistic basis for defining geological analogues, a framework for comparing similar petroleum systems and for making inferences about the new exploration potential within them. There must some new life in some of these show dogs yet!

EMGS
EMGS is a Norwegian, leading market share Geophysical company focused on the acquisition, processing, inversion and interpretation of 3D marine controlled source electro-magnetic (CSEM) data. To date that they have acquired over 850 commercial surveys worldwide and have over 110,000 km sq of 3D multi-client data covering many of the world's petroleum basins. The company has developed methods and tools to enable clients to integrate CSEM data into existing seismic and other geophysical datasets. When applied systematically across a CSEM sensitive portfolio. The new information provided by CSEM has the effect of polarizing existing evaluations, making CSEM a valuable tool in exploration venture evaluation. EMGS work in frontier regions and mature basins, from the Arctic to southeast Asia, and from offices across the world.
