Lessons from past disruptive discoveries

The importance of questioning subsurface assumptions 0

Friday, June 28, 2024, Webinar, Online

The importance of questioning subsurface assumptions – clues and observations which might be found in the datasets – and a different working style to promote disruptive discovery thinking

'Disruptive' discoveries are the material exploration finds that can reset basin creaming curves and invigorate exploration (think Stabroek in Guyana).

They require some thinking beyond the norm. Careful data observation in combination with the application of new technology, especially seismic imaging.

This talk draws on recent global discoveries to suggest some new play types that may be present across the wider Gulf of Mexico.

Mark Shann - Chief technical officer - Westlawn Americas Offshore

Disruptive oil and gas discoveries - promoting disruptive thinking!

Talk Description.
Disruptive' discoveries are the material exploration finds that can reset basin creaming curves and invigorate exploration (think Stabroek in Guyana).

They require some “rebel” thinking beyond the norm. Careful data observation in combination with the application of new technology, especially seismic imaging.

This talk examines the potential hydrocarbon potential across the Gulf of Mexico with respect to global discovery analogues and touches on play aspects of isolated carbonate build ups (Zohr as example), thinking about heat flow assumptions and the impact (Namibia), and a deliberate search for high NTG in deep water slope settings (Zama and Girasol as examples).

It draws on recent global discoveries to suggest that some new play types may also be present across the wider Gulf of Mexico and beyond, looking for new frontiers.

Mark Shann is Chief Technical Officer of Westlawn Americas Offshore, a portfolio company of Westlawn, a private investment firm based in Houston Texas, which is focused on long-term investment in the global oil and gas industry.

Mr Shann participated in finding the Zama field in Mexico in 2017, while working for Sierra Oil and Gas Mexico.

Westlawn Americas Offshore

Future Energy Partners Ltd
Future Energy Partners (FEP) is a unique oil and gas advisory service which prides itself on technical excellence in selected fields and supplementing business management and leadership; in the face of uncertainty.

We offer truthful, professional opinion and advice; no playback of what you already know, and no spin.

FEP was founded by 4 senior industry practitioners who consider the challenges faced by today's oil and gas environment are going to require herculean acts of leadership and technical skill in a transforming, transitioning, industry, in order to maintain an energy supply that is sustainable and even recognisable compared to recent history.

Similarly nations developing an oil and gas industry face related challenges as they seek to maximise the benefits of this new wealth-creating opportunity - in a responsible manner.

Global reach

FEP actively participates in the facilitation and conduct of seminars and webinars worldwide, for example in conjunction with its associate partner Finding Petroleum.

Our presence reaches parts of the globe, such as: the UK, the USA, Sub-Saharan Africa, with partners wherever we work.
