Leading edge exploration in Africa
... invest in Africa!

Wednesday, March 26, 2014, London, The Geological Society
Finding Petroleum are pleased to announce our first full day event, taking place across two venues.
The day will consist of quality talks from industry leaders, as well as a large area to browse stands.
In this one day event, we will be looking for innovations in African exploration. Where might they be found; what are the key exploration themes; what new technologies do we need?
Some 'hotspots' might be:
Shale oil/shale gas:
Are the most promising rocks the Silurian 'hot shale' of North Africa and, at the opposite end of the continent, the Karoo of South Africa?
East African oil:
Can the oily rift plays of Uganda and, now, Kenya be extended to the north, into Ethiopia, and to the south, perhaps as far as Malawi? Is there a new oil play along the coastal margin/transition zone of Kenya and Tanzania?
Interior Intra-cratonic basins:
Can we figure out how to explore the data-poor regions of Chad, the CAR and the Sudans? Do early experiences of onshore Brazil offer some clues?
Sub-salt:
Is the sub-salt (or should that be the pre-salt?) of offshore Angola as significant as that offshore Brazil? Does this play extend into onshore Angola?
We welcome presentations and exhibits that reflect and address the themes outlined above: contact David Bamford and Terry O'Donnell, respectively, via the website.

Catherine Hill - Structural Geologist - Getech
The Tectonic Evolution of Africa - New insights into margin evolution from potential fields data
Talk Description. As part of Getech’s Globe new ventures platform, Getech has been carrying out detailed Tectonic Evolution studies at a regional scale in a number of areas. Most recently, in 2013, Getech completed Tectonic Evolution reports for the Equatorial Atlantic and South Atlantic and we are continuing the series with a report for the East Africa margin. These reports add to Getech’s existing reports for the East African Rift System and North Africa to provide a complete structural and tectonic coverage for the whole of Africa.
The Tectonic Evolution reports are typically separated into three technical aspects:
1) Structural mapping at 1:100,000 scale, underpinned by Getech’s extensive gravity and magnetic data.
2) Verifying this interpretation with the aid of 2D gravity and magnetic profiles and regional depth-to-basement grids.
3) Integrating this data into the global plate model.
The talk draws on examples from the Tectonic Evolution reports for East African and the South Atlantic to show how this workflow has led to new insights into the evolution of these margins.
Catherine Hill joined Getech in 2007 as a Structural Geologist. She completed her undergraduate degree in Environmental Earth Science at the University of East Anglia, and her Masters degree in Structural Geology and Geophysics at the University of Leeds.
In her time at Getech, Catherine has worked on a range of Regional Reports and Commissions. Most recently, Catherine managed The Tectonic Evolution of the Equatorial Atlantic Report and she is currently managing The Tectonic Evolution of East Africa Report.

Neil Hodgson - VP geoscience - Searcher Seismic
A new seismic tool to reduce source maturity risk in unexplored basins: Example from the Luderitz Basin offshore Namibia
Talk Description. Seismically derived geothermal gradient mapping conflated with the recently de-risked source rock in the Luderitz Basin provides a method for defining an oil generative window and constraining source rock maturity risk. This under-utilized technique is not exclusive to Namibia, and its application in many other deepwater clastic basins provides a tool for constraining source rock maturity in countless undrilled frontier basins around the world.
Neil Hodgson is VP Searcher Seismic, a company which provides high quality exploration data and leading edge tech to the global exploration industries. He is formerly executive VP geoscience with Spectrum ASA, and exploration manager at Matra Petroleum, Premier Oil and GB Group.

Roberta Masotti - Senior Geophysicist - TGS
Harper Basin Prospectivity clarified by the Sunfish 3D survey
Talk Description. The Sunfish 3D seismic survey, comprising approximately 6,200 km2 of deepwater 3D long offset seismic data was acquired in 2013 following evidence of prospectivity from 2D seismic surveys acquired between 2001 and 2010.
Exploration wells drilled in the Liberia Basin have proven a working Upper Cretaceous petroleum system in the deepwater. This play is defined as turbiditic sands in slope fans sourced by Albian-Turonian source rocks and sealed by deepwater shales.
The Harper Basin offshore Liberia lies between the Liberian Basin, to the north, and the Ivorian/Tano Basin to the southeast. The basin covers approximately 20,000 km2 extending from shelf to basin floor. It is an embayment between two pronounced transform ridges formed by transpression: Grand Cess to the north and Cape Palmas to the south. It is clearly separated from the adjacent basins by these transform fault systems with its southern limit defined by the St Paul Fault Zone.
The geological structure and tectonic history of this basin is similar to that of the adjacent basins. The Ivorian/Tano Basin is a proven oil producer that contains several large oil fields including the recently developed Jubilee Field. The Liberian Basin is still relatively early in the exploration cycle but has had recent successes with Narina-1 (2012) and Bee Eater (2013) both in LB-09 which have discovered light oil in Turonian, Cenomanian and Albian sandstones in fan systems covering an area greater than one hundred square kilometres.
This paper presents examples of 3D pre-stack migration results across Blocks LB2, 3, 4 & 5 plus results from 2D data across Blocks LB1-7 with AVO analysis showing clear indications of prospectivity in this undrilled basin including large channel systems of Cenomanian to Maastrichtian age.
Roberta is a Senior Geophysicist with almost 20 years’ experience gained in research and consulting for leading oil and gas operators. Often working in multidisciplinary teams Roberta has been actively involved in exploration, development and production geophysics, principally on the UK and Norwegian Continental Shelf. Some of these projects comprised seismic interpretation for prospect identification and successful application submissions for exploration licensing rounds.
Her more recent work has included detailed prospectivity analysis of offshore Liberia and Sierra Leone using TGS 2D/3D data.
Roberta has a PhD in Geophysics from Leicester University and an MSc in Geology from Milan University (Italy). She is based in the TGS London office.
TGS TGS is the world's largest geoscience data company, known for its asset-light, multi-client business model and global data library.
