International exploration for Unconventionals
New Ideas are desperately needed!
0
Tuesday, October 7, 2014, London, Royal Society of Chemistry
If companies are to explore successfully for unconventional oil and gas outside North America, some “new ideas” are needed.
This is because exploitation of shale oil and shale gas in North America is underpinned by access to huge amounts of data from the literally thousands of wells that have been drilled to explore in and around working petroleum systems – well logs, cuttings, cores, fluids and so on are freely available in vast amounts.
Elsewhere in the world, such a rich data base is rare and we are going to have to figure out how to identify commercially viable unconventional petroleum using our brains and a host of different measurements – from satellites, from aircraft, from folk hitting rocks with a hammer, from lab analyses, from all sorts of seismic – that is, from what some call multi-measurements. Only then can we hone in on the “sweet spots” which drive the economics of unconventional resources.
It is not yet obvious that we know how to do this - “New Ideas” are needed and success is not guaranteed.
Please join us on October 7th when we will dig into these topics and define what will bring success (and maybe who will deliver it!).

Jon Watson - Geosciences Exploration Manager - Austin Bridgeporth Ltd
The usefulness of potential field data in unconventionals: From free data to fracture mapping
Talk Description. Shale gas exploration outside the US needs a different approach.
The lack of well information, differing land ownership issues and area scale, aside from identifying initial areas of interest, all present problems and require the need to step out to a regional level, then work inwards.
Public domain land gravity datasets across the UK and Poland (two areas where unconventional exploration is establishing itself) provide an excellent framework to regional understanding and offer a complimentary tool to focus areas of interest and seismic planning.
Moving from regional to block scale, high resolution (airborne or land) gravity and FTG datasets offer detailed information on fault mapping and structural control. The information can be obtained quickly and at low cost. With integration of well and seismic data the interpretation can be carried through to detailed geological modelling, understanding stress/strain relationships and well planning.
Jonathan Watson is Interpretation Manager at Bridgeporth who has extensive experience in acquisition, processing and interpretation of potential field data within the oil and gas industry.
Jon has worked for over 15 years within the industry, starting as a processor, and then moving onto interpretation geophysicist and then team leader of interpretation department at an airborne acquisition company. He has worked predominantly in gravity and magnetics worldwide, particularly in its integration with seismic data , and has experience in working internationally.
Jon has a BSc from Manchester Metropolitan University and MRes from UCL-Birkbeck, has been external supervisor to a number of MSc students and involved in research projects within the petroleum industry. Jon is now responsible for a growing team of interpretation geophysicists at Bridgeporth.
Austin Bridgeporth Ltd AustinBridgeporth comprises two global providers of geoscience services. Austin Exploration, who have been delivering land and marine potential field acquisition services since 1976 and have an extensive data library of land and marine gravity and magnetic data covering the Americas, Asia, Africa and Europe. While Bridgeporth was formed in 2011 by a group of highly experienced geoscientists to provide airborne and land geophysical data acquisition, processing and integrated interpretation services utilising gravity gradiometry, gravity, magnetics, LiDAR and magnetotelluric techniques for natural resource exploration. David Bamford - Director - Future Energy Partners Ltd
Ranking European Shale Opportunities
Talk Description. Our US colleagues have shown us how to assess and develop shale resources - their knowledge and skills improve all the time but there is nothing we do not know how to do.
Can we look at potential European opportunities and figure out which might be the best?
There are some fundamental questions in considering any opportunity: what is the quality of the target shale itself; has it 'hosted' a significant, producing, petroleum province; what is it's 'fraccibility'; is there a sufficient data base to enable economic 'sweet spots' to be found; is there a vigorous oil field services sector capable of doing the work; is there strong, local, societal opposition to any developments; is there strong political backing for the enterprise?
We can use the answers to these questions to assess and later to rank any shale opportunity that comes in front of us, and I have attempted this for a number of European opportunities - Bowland Shale, onshore northern UK; Kimmeridge Clay, onshore southern UK; Kimmeridge Clay, North Sea; Posidonia Shale, onshore Northern Germany; Bazhenov Shale, West Siberia; and others.
The conclusions are, I think, surprising, and do not at all correspond to the media coverage of these opportunities!
David Bamford is well known around the oil & gas industry both as an explorer and a geophysicist. He retired from BP plc in 2003, his last four positions being Chief Geophysicist (1990-1995), Business Unit Leader (General Manager) for first West Africa and then Norway (1995-1999), and finally Head of Exploration until 2003.

Tony Grindrod - Trainer - Finding Petroleum x
A very different ball-game – present and future prospects in the UK and North America
Talk Description. There is a marked contrast between attitudes to shale oil and gas exploration in ‘data-rich’ countries and ‘data-poor ‘countries such as the UK, Poland where exploration is in its infancy and commercial production is yet to begin.
In this presentation we look at the contrast to attitudes highlighted by questions posed by educators, politicians, the media and the general public by looking at engineering, infrastructure, commercial and demographic differences between the USA and other countries which are thought to host unconventional resources.
Tony has more than 40 years experience in the international oil and gas industry. Originally with supermajors based in The Hague, Houston and Perth (Australia) he worked on projects in the North Sea, Venezuela, Australia and the USA (onshore and offshore). Subsequently, he developed and delivered short courses with JAPEC and Actis Geoscience to inform engineers, IT specialists, politicians, bankers and lawyers about the industry. At the same time he was active in exploration in the Los Angeles and Paradox Basins.
In 1993 he switched emphasis to consult on shale gas plays in Texas, followed by work on the Bakken, Eagle Ford and Permian Basins commencing in 2003. He continues to advise committees in Washington DC and Vienna on energy policy.
Tony is a fellow of the Geological Society and Energy Institute and a member of the PESGB, SEG and EAGE. He has also served for many years on various AAPG committees and is an award winner of their House of Delegates.
