What exploration opportunities are there in the Middle East, from the Levant to the Straits of Hormuz?
First of all, do we actually need any exploration there? Absent identification of future reserves, is the future for many countries one of inexorable decline; what is the realistic production potential of Iraq; are new reserves (or simply old ones) being discovered in Kurdistan?
Above ground, of course there are some significant issues to contemplate, from the commercial realities of Eastern Mediterranean gas, the relationship of Kurdistan to Iraq, the security situation in Iraq, the needs of Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Oman, , to whatever is happening in Iran. And is the Syrian situation going to result in some sort of regional conflict?
Below ground, these countries show different stages of exploration maturity, with probably Iraq the leading contender for exploration dollars, with Kurdistan as a key component, absent any other consideration.
This Forum will examine whether or not we should anticipate an imminent ‘exploration Spring’ in the Middle East, in particular whether further large discoveries can be foreseen, and if so, where?

He was on the board of Premier Oil from May 2014 to May 2016.
He retired from BP plc in 2003, his last four positions being Chief Geophysicist (1990-1995), Business Unit Leader (General Manager) for first West Africa and then Norway (1995-1999), and finally Head of Exploration until 2003.
He has served on the boards of Paras Ltd, a small exploration and IS/IT consulting company in which he held 22% equity, until its sale to RPS Energy in 2008 and Welltec a/s, a Danish well engineering company, as the nominee of the private equity investor Riverside.
From 2012 to 201 he was on the board of ASX-quoted Australia Oriental Energy as a non-executive director.
He was a founder of Richmond Energy Partners, a small oil & gas research house, and several media companies that focus on the oil & gas sector, and has served as an advisor to Alliance Bernstein, Opus Executive, the Parkmead Group plc, and Kimmeridge Energy LLP. Since retiring from BP, he has undertaken asset and company valuation projects for investment banks, hedge funds and small oil companies.

Dirk Cuthbertson - Marketing Manager - Getech
Influence of Tectonics and Climate Evolution on Clastic Sediment Source-to-Sink Relationships in the Eastern Mediterranean
Talk Description. Relatively recent exploration successes in Israeli and Cypriot waters have put the offshore Levant Basin on the radar for a number of oil companies. There remains however one particular enigma: what is the sediment source for the Lower Miocene reservoirs that have proved so prolific? We will examine evidence from drainage analysis of the surrounding hinterland, palaeoclimatic research and palaeogeographic mapping for the region based on Getech’s Global Plate Model to appraise some of the contenders for sediment source and look at why reservoir development ceased prior to the Messinian Salinity Crisis of the late Miocene.
Dirk Cuthbertson graduated with an M.Sc. from Royal Holloway, University of London in 1996 and joined Fina Exploration as an Operations and Wellsite Geologist. Following a sabbatical from the industry Dirk joined what was then Fugro Robertson in North Wales in 2003 as a Senior Scout before becoming Global Fields Manager. He joined Getech in 2006 and is now their Marketing Manager.

Dr James Scotchman - Geoscientist for the Middle East - Landmark Exploration Insights
Beyond conventional: Unconventional prospectivity of the Middle East
Talk Description. The conventional hydrocarbon resources of the Middle East have long been the main focus of exploration with unconventional resources often being overlooked. With the success of unconventional development in North America, shale-gas and -oil of the Middle East is beginning to draw attention. Of particular interest are the early Silurian and Middle-Late Jurassic targets which are prolific conventional source rocks across the region. Within this talk these potential targets are assessed for their future unconventional potential.
James Scotchman joined Neftex in late 2012 as a geoscientist in the Middle East team where he focussed upon Silurian stratigraphy. Since late 2013 he joined the Consultancy team where he works on an array of projects integrating client data with the unique Neftex Earth Model. James has a doctorate from University College London which focussed upon the timing of submarine-fan deposition within the Ainsa Basin, Spanish Pyrenees.

Petromall - Panel Discussion - - Future Energy Partners Ltd
The Middle East - how do western companies prosper there?
Talk Description. Earlier presentations have reminded us that the Middle East is the epicentre of world oil (and gas), that the geology is rich and prolific, and that there is political upheaval and worrying security risk. Can or should any western company try to go there for the first time, and can they hope to prosper? We will consider these questions via 3 x 10-15 minute presentations from:
Javad Ardalan (Director, Oxford Persian Institute) on Iran Suha Najjar (Consultant, Akkadia Partners LLP) on Iraq Anthony Franks (Partner, Mars Omega LLP) on Oman
followed by a 20-30 minute audience Q&A, led by the chaiman.
