Finding Oil and Gas in Sub Saharan Africa

Offshore exploration potential / source rocks, Guinea Basin petroleum systems, Outeniqua - and ESG! 0

Friday, May 24, 2019, London, The Geological Society

Download the report

At this Finding Petroleum forum, we'll look at the potential in SubSaharan Africa - where we might go from here with exploration and production.

There are, we believe, two critical issues:

Firstly, do we actually understand the way petroleum systems work - on the face of it, the answer appears to be, Not Yet!

Secondly, as investors place a greater emphsis on ESG - Environmental, Social & Governance - what does this mean for explorers who typically lead the way in Africa?

We suspect that many of our audience will think this is little to do with them, perhaps ‘beyond their pay grade’ – but consider this:

As an exploration manager, you are recommending entry to a Country that has massively important elections coming up, that has a well-known history of corruption, and where the fiscal terms and petroleum regulations are uncertain – all in addition to the normal drilling and sub-surface risks: what are you going to recommend to your executives?

And how would you then feel about an ESG audit that was carried out just like a financial audit?

David Bamford - Director - Finding Petroleum

Welcome & Introduction: a scramble for Africa?

David Bamford is well known around the oil & gas industry both as an explorer and a geophysicist. He holds a Physics degree from the University of Bristol and a Ph.D in Geological Sciences from the University of Birmingham.

Since 2004, he has been a non-executive director at Tullow Oil plc, being recruited for this position especially for his exploration knowledge. He serves on the Nominations and Remuneration Committees, and was chairman of the latter, and Senior Independent Director, for 3 years prior to his retire from the board at the end of April 2014.

He was on the board of Premier Oil from May 2014 to May 2016.

He retired from BP plc in 2003, his last four positions being Chief Geophysicist (1990-1995), Business Unit Leader (General Manager) for first West Africa and then Norway (1995-1999), and finally Head of Exploration until 2003.

He has served on the boards of Paras Ltd, a small exploration and IS/IT consulting company in which he held 22% equity, until its sale to RPS Energy in 2008 and Welltec a/s, a Danish well engineering company, as the nominee of the private equity investor Riverside.

From 2012 to 201 he was on the board of ASX-quoted Australia Oriental Energy as a non-executive director.

He was a founder of Richmond Energy Partners, a small oil & gas research house, and several media companies that focus on the oil & gas sector, and has served as an advisor to Alliance Bernstein, Opus Executive, the Parkmead Group plc, and Kimmeridge Energy LLP. Since retiring from BP, he has undertaken asset and company valuation projects for investment banks, hedge funds and small oil companies.

Finding Petroleum
Finding Petroleum was established to help the oil and gas industry network, and stay up to date on the latest technological developments. It does this via hosting regular events and with an online social network of nearly 10,000 members.

Julian Moore - technical director - Applied Petroleum Technology

Source rocks and phase prediction -- offshore southern Africa

PhD from Newcastle on fluid flow properties of mudstones; 12 years in BP largely in exploration - experience in Africa, New Ventures, Unconventional resources, ex-pat in India and Assurance. The last 3 and half years I have been technical director of APT UK working on a variety of petroleum system and geochemistry projects for a global portfolio of clients. Currently consulting for PetroSA on source characterisation in Block 9.

Applied Petroleum Technology
APT’s highly qualified geochemists draw on experience gained in services companies, research organizations and leading oil companies. They are available to supplement clients’ exploration teams within well evaluation, license projects, concession rounds and regional evaluations.

Our consultants will take full responsibility in the planning of geochemistry programmes for exploration wells, production wells and licensing projects, and can bring valuable input to the concession process. They will also take care of daily routine tasks, and will be available for short or long term involvement.

Giant potential emerges from the Guinea Marginal Plateau (Guinea-Bissau and Guinea)

Talk Description.
The Guinea Marginal Plateau (GMP), the submarine salient of Africa that lobes south-westwards into the Atlantic Ocean from Guinea-Bissau and Guinea, is considered by FEC to widely host mature, Jurassic source rocks. This contribution uses geological and geochemical integration, plus basin modelling to outline the location of these source rocks, which in the south west underlie large closures within older Cretaceous carbonates. Confirmation of the modelling results is provided by examining a piston survey acquired by TDI-Brooks in 2001. The outcome is a significant upgrade in prospectivity. Some 400 kilometres separate the wells drilled to the north of the GMP in Guinea-Bissau from those to the south east in Guinea.
Chief Geologist for First Exchange Corporation and Fortesa International working Mauritania to Guinea. Senior author of Petroleum System reports on the MSGBC Basin and now supplying public domain observations on the regional petroleum geology to the Msgbcfirst.com blog site.

Consultant geologist since 1993 and, outside the environs of the MSGBC Basin, currently active in Angola and East Africa. Previously with Conoco with posts in Jakarta, Luanda, Houston and London. Earlier with the International Division of the British Geological Survey and based in Georgetown (Guyana), Belém (Brasil) and Bandung (Indonesia).

Karyna Rodriguez - - Searcher Seismic

A source rock story from seismic data in The Gambia and Guinea Bissau

Petroleum geoscientist with 25 years of multidisciplinary experience in global offshore and onshore exploration inclined projects. She worked in companies like BG and PEMEX gaining diverse experience from regional play and prospect generation and evaluation, to working closely with high level management on their portfolio strategies.

Rob Crossley - Chief Geoscientist - CGG

Data-rich study on the petroleum systems of the Outeniqua Basin

Following his PhD work in the southern part of the Kenya Rift Valley, Rob gained 9 years of experience as a lecturer in the University of Malawi, followed by over 30 years of experience in the oil and gas geoscience services industry.

His geoscience service work started in 1986 with Robertson Research as Sedimentologist, and he has remained with the Robertson team in North Wales throughout, becoming part of the CGG’s Geoscience division in 2013. His early work included reservoir and field unitisation studies in the North Sea, subsurface projects along the West African margin, and outcrop to subsurface work across North Africa.

His role became increasingly petroleum geological, undertaking evaluation and exploration projects across the Middle East, India and the Far East.

He subsequently worked as lead geologist on projects in the Sea of Okhotsk, Korea, Gulf of Thailand, Pakistan, Kazakhstan and the Beaufort Sea. He was involved in helping develop our global source and reservoir prediction services through integration of large data sets by using plate modelling and palaeogeographic mapping to build a framework for modelling palaeoclimate, palaeooceanography and palaeotides.

More recently, he has been working on multiclient projects along the conjugate Atlantic margins of Africa and South America.
