Drilling and the digital oilfield
Earlier warnings, activity streams, subsurface data for drillers, drill cuttings data
1
Tuesday, May 8, 2012, Aberdeen, Aberdeen Marriott Hotel
How much can you optimise drilling and wells efficiency by making your corporate information work harder?
Our free conference in Aberdeen on May 8th looks at ways to improve efficiency, reduce non productive time and improve safety, by doing more with the existing information - making it more available, easier to manage and processing it in new ways.
Find out about:
Getting earlier warning about emerging drilling problems and suggestions on what to do, based on a comparison between current drilling operations and drililng operations from your company's history
Corporate communications as a stream of short messages rather than lengthy e-mails and memos
Giving drillers better access to the knowledge of subsurface staff and their models
Getting useful information from drill cuttings faster
Finding out faster if a change to well conditions is a problem
Discussion: can you convince your boss that these tools offer return on investment

Odd Erik Gundersen - Development Director - Verdande Technology
Identifying critical drilling problems in advance - comparing past experience with current operations
Talk Description. DrillEdge technology is a real-time intervention tool that identifies critical drilling problems in advance and helps resolve them through customer-defined best practices. The technology is constructed on the principle of case-based reasoning, a method building on the simple premise that similar problems have similar solutions. This immediate intervention-while-drilling response provides a very thorough, fast and practical real-time bridge between past experience and current operations that reduces risk and non-productive time, while improving drilling performance.
Odd Erik Gundersen currently is the Development Director at Verdande Technology and has been with the company since 2007. Before joining Verdande Technology, Gundersen taught computer graphics and visualization at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. He has published scientific papers about case-based reasoning, intelligent software agents and physically based animation of fire. Gundersen has a Masters degree in Computer Science from Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
Verdande Technology Verdande Technology AS develops products that use the Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) methodology. Verdande Technology is headquartered in Trondheim, Norway, with regional offices in Houston, Texas and Abu Dhabi, UAE. The company remains privately funded by Statoil Venture, ProVenture Seed AS, and Investinor.

Samit Sengupta - -
A Case Study on Using WITSML to Bring Geological Information to Your Desktop
Talk Description. Geological information gathered from the drill cuttings samples of a well provides us with an insight of its subsurface strata with a high degree of certainty that sensor measurements simply cannot.
Yet, whereas sensor measurements are nearly instantaneous and can be acquired at the press of a button, geological information relies on human observations and judgments that are only available after the drill cuttings have been retrieved at surface.
Traditionally, the general practice in the industry has been to view morning reports/lithlogs to validate formation tops and other key characteristics of the well being drilled.
Today, in a fast paced drilling operation, geological data finds its use in a variety of real-time workflows such as geo-steering, pore-pressure monitoring, formation evaluation and so on.
We explore the use of WITSML standards to provide geological data and information for automated use by some of these workflows.
Samit Sengupta has over 30 years’ experience in the upstream sector of the oil and gas industry. After graduating from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, with a degree in Civil Engineering, Samit worked in the subsurface data acquisition and analysis industry in Australasia, USA, Africa and Europe with Schlumberger, Gearhart and Halliburton, prior to creating Geologix, an international software company providing products and services for aggregation, analysis, interpretation and visualization of well data

Nick Gibson - VP Sales & Marketing - Sekal
Early warning of emerging drilling problems using pure physics of the well bore
Talk Description. DrillScene Advanced Monitoring software from Sekal models key drilling parameters in real-time, calibrates itself to the physical reality within the well bore, then uses the modelled drilling parameters along with their minimum and maximum boundaries of normal well behaviour as a backdrop to the real-time drilling measurements.
This provides the Drilling Analyst with a unique drilling tool to quickly identify if changing well conditions are due to normal well behaviour or if they are the early symptoms of developing drilling problems. The DrillScene software uses WITS or WITSML format real-time data feeds as the input data.
Sekal Sekal AS supplies solutions that employ real time data from a rig to calculate and give a detailed and refined picture of the state of an oil/gas well. The solutions may be used together with existing drilling control systems and to detect drilling problems in advance of undesirable occurrences. The result is a safer and more efficient drilling process. The company's principal owners are IRIS, Statoil, Procom Venture, SåkorninVest, Prekubator and Wellwork Invest.
