Philip Lesslar - Information Management & Governance Dept., Technology & Information Management Division - Petronas Carigali

Introduction to the International Association for information and Data Quality, Asia Pacific

Philip is from Malaysia and worked in Shell for 36 years from 1973 until his retirement at the end of 2009. He spent the first 13 years as a micropaleontologist specializing in Tertiary Foraminifera of NW Borneo. In this capacity, he spent a year in Rijswijk, The Netherlands, undergoing specialized training and fieldwork in The Netherlands, France, Spain and Northern Italy. While working in this field he developed a methodology and toolkit for a probabilistic approach to computer assisted interpretation of paleo-environments based on foraminifera.
He then transferred to geocomputing and information management in team lead and principal consultant roles in data and data quality management. He moved from Shell Sarawak (Malaysia) to Shell International based first in Houston, Texas, and subsequently in Rijswijk, The Netherlands. In this capacity he has been responsible for initiating and coordinating the development of Global EP Data Standards, Data Quality Metrics and for how these will be deployed globally.

He is now with PETRONAS Carigali Sdn.Bhd in Kuala Lumpur, working in an information management governance role.

He and his wife exercise and play badminton as much as they can. They have 2 children and travel is a priority on the family agenda.

Jonathan Henderson - Managing director - Foster Findlay Associates (ffA)

Integrating Interpretation Expertise and Objective Data Analysis in 3D Interpretation

Talk Description.
Seismic interpretation is highly dependent on the assessment of the interpreter. Due to the subjectivity this introduces and the need for efficiency many attempts have been made to develop automated interpretation tools. However, seismic data remains a non-unique, abstract and incomplete representation of the geology of the subsurface and the most efficient tool that we have for resolving the ambiguities and “filling in the gaps” is the expertise of the human interpreter. Therefore we need to find ways to effectively combine the power of visualisation and the expertise of the interpreter. One area in which this is particularly important is in being able to accurately delineate geological elements as 3D objects that can be used in the construction of a geological model.

To tackle this problem we need to understand both the power and frailties of the human visualisation system. On the positive side, we are able to discern and recognise features in very complex scenes due to our ability to adapt to wide variations in contrast and scale and because we are able to compare mentally what we see now with previous experience. Interpreters bring the knowledge and experience that are needed to imprint geological information on the data analysis and ensure that we work within the constraints of what is geologically reasonable. On the negative side, our visual system is limited as we are restricted to analysing only what we can see on the surface and, due to the abstract nature of the features that we are examining, can be quite easily “fooled”.

This talk will discuss briefly some of the common ways in which visual perception can impact on our interpretation before describing a technology for geobody delineation that allow us to work very interactively with visualisation systems to define the 3D geometry of geological features in ways that simultaneously utilise interpretation knowledge and data derived information. This technology, Adaptive Geobodies, combines sophisticated analysis of the variation in the statistics within complex multi-attribute images to drive geobody delineation. Key to the utility of the Adaptive Geobodies is that it is fast and easy to use.

The power of the Adaptive Geobodies comes from the fact that it encompasses the human observer’s ability to overcome the ambiguities inherent in seismic data but is not affected by perception issues.

Jonathan Henderson is a physicist with over 20 years of extensive experience in imaging and image analysis. His initial interests were in medical imaging, where he had worked on developing new methods for extracting and quantifying the information contained in x-rays and ultrasound scans. Since joining ffA in 2001, he has used his knowledge of medical image analysis to help the Company develop unique seismic image analysis technologies. Jonathan has been Managing Director of ffA for 5 years during which time the Company, its global customer base and its software portfolio have all expanded substantially.
