Full Agenda

Wednesday, October 11, 2017
London
The Geological Society

On October 11th we'll take a look at updates in non-seismic geophysics technology - gravity, magnetics and electromagnetics, satellite surveys, seeps, advances in geology and more.

We'll also look at developments with non conventional seismic - which can include gathering seismic data with fibre optics in wells, permanent seabed monitoring (with nodes or cables), placing onshore seismic receivers by drone, anything other than towed streamer or standard onshore cabled / wireless seismic.

The event will include an afternoon workshop, free for all delegates, with updates on electromagnetic technology in oil and gas, sponsored and led by EMGS, one of the world's leading electromagnetics companies.

Seismic is 'king' of exploration, but there's plenty more out there - let's find out more about how much of it can help us to better understanding the subsurface.

Prediction of well results by using CSEM data

Talk Description
Oil companies constantly seek to improve the exploration well performance by obtaining a more reliable prediction on prospect risk and volume.

It is well documented that there often is a large mismatch between the predicted resource volume and the actual outcome. EMGS’ Exploration Solution, which integrates CSEM data into the exploration evaluation workflow, improves the prediction performance. Seismic data provides good structural and geometrical control.

Therefore, we often see accurate evaluations on reservoir and trap chance factors. However, the charge and seal properties, which directly links to the presence of hydrocarbons in the reservoir, often has a large uncertainty if using seismic data only. Recoverable volume estimations are hardly ever correct, especially due to the high uncertainty related to the net reservoir area and thickness.

CSEM data provides a resistivity image of the subsurface, where resistivity is sensitive to the reservoir hydrocarbon saturation. Integrating CSEM data will therefore improve the risk assessment on charge and seal, and limit the recoverable volume distribution uncertainty due to its natural sensitivity to net pay area and thickness.

We will here demonstrate such results by comparing our pre-drill predictions and post well evaluations of wells drilled during 2017.
Daniel Baltar is a Global Exploration Advisor for EMGS ASA. He has been responsible for the integration of EM data into Pemex’s exploration workflow in the deep-water Gulf of Mexico, after dozens of prospects being consistently evaluated; this workflow takes credit for Pemex’s recent and outstanding deep water exploration success. Previously, Daniel has worked as an explorationist and seismic QI in many different basins and depositional environments. Also, he has experience in pore pressure prediction and shallow hazard analysis. He holds an MSc in Hydrocarbon Exploration and Production form ISE/Heriot-Watt and a degree in Physics.

(15 min talk) Reducing exploration cost and subsurface uncertainty by integrating non seismic data

Talk Description
- using a range of different data types can reduce model ambiguity
- seismically focussed exploration strategies may be too short sighted in some cases - due to limited representation of the range of geoscientific model parameters, and high survey and processing costs
- many exploration methods are used widely by the mineral exploration industry but not by the oil and gas industry
Markus H. Krieger is Co-Founder and Managing Director of TERRASYS Geophysics and holds an MSc in Geophysics from Hamburg University.

Due to his background in applied geophysics he moved the company to become a service provider for the oil & gas industry, focusing on integrated interpretation from a non-seismic perspective. Always striving to facilitate the most advanced solutions to TERRASYS’ clients, he kept good connections to the scientific community and established a strategic R&D culture at the company with a highly motivated team of geoscientists.

Markus still sees a large demand for developing adequate interpretation tools for a multi-physics approach in order to address increasingly complex geological scenarios. He is always interested in discussing and implementing fresh ideas for a better understanding of the subsurface.

Markus is member of AAPG, AGU, ASEG, BDG, DGG, DGMK, EAGE, EGU, HGS, IAMG, PESGB and SEG.

Workshop session 3: Reservoir description by using CSEM data

Talk Description
Reservoir description by using CSEM data
EMGS and/or its clients will present pilot projects where CSEM data is used for near-field exploration and appraisal decisions. What information does CSEM data carry of reservoir quality? What can you say about the water-oil contact? How can you effectively map your resource potential within a license at a very early stage?
