Seismic is King!”…………………but are there any Princes?
Seismic technology has dominated geoscience, and thus the Exploration and Exploitation businesses, throughout my career in oil & gas. And within it there continues to be remarkable innovation, led by companies such as PGS.
However, from the vast wave spectrum known to us from physics, it would be strange perhaps if sound waves were absolutely the only ones that offer us the necessary lateral and vertical resolution. Of course it is clear as soon as you dig into sonic wave theory why this resolution triumphs, over potential field measurements for example, with perhaps the only limitation being that you do have to be on the earth’s surface to make it work………………..
Thus, in addition to reviewing seismic innovation, we thought we would devote some of this event to examining technologies based on innovative physics or airborne/satellite deployment (or both).

Gordon has over 10 years’ experience in developing and applying geoscience technologies. He is co-founder and shareholder of Adrok Ltd and since Adrok’s inception Gordon has managed technology developments and the company’s global services business. Gordon’s a Member of the Energy Institute, PESGB, EAGE, SEG, AAPG, the Scottish Oil Club, Institute of Directors and the Caledonian Club. Gordon supports young entrepreneurs as a Business Mentor for Business Mentoring Scotland, as well as for the Prince’s Trust Youth Business Scotland. Gordon holds a BSc (Hons) in Geography from the University of Edinburgh, is a PRINCE2 Registered Practitioner and completed the School of CEOs.

Inverse problems utilize model parameters to infer information about the observable data. We present two advanced methods of inversion. The first utilizes advanced stabilization methods in the inversion to generate high resolution and stable Earth models through the process of Full Waveform Inversion. Once an accurate model has been generated we demonstrate the use of wave equation reflectivity inversion to compensate for acquisition related illumination and amplitude variation; mitigating uncertainty in imaging.

|Phil has over 32 years of experience in the field of marine geophysics. During that time he has held several senior level technical positions in marine seismic data acquisition at Western Geophysical, WesternGeco, Veritas DGC, and CGGVeritas. Prior to joining Polarcus in December of 2008, Phil held the position of Geophysical Manager for CGGVeritas' marine acquisition product line. Phil holds a BS degree in Geology and a MS degree in Geophysics from the University of Connecticut in the USA.|

|Duncan Irving is the Oil & Gas Consulting Team Lead, EMEA & APAC with Teradata. Duncan joined Teradata from the University of Manchester where he instructed in geophysical interpretation and geocomputational methods for the last seven years. He was involved in consulting and research projects involving user interactions with massive subsurface datasets and more general upstream data management, and he continues to maintain research links as an honorary lecturer. One long term project was with Teradata and he drove the development of Teradata's capabilities in the Upstream Oil and Gas area. This time provided him with a deep understanding of the capabilities of Teradata and how they can best be used in the petroleum industry.|
He is a geophysicist and also has a PhD in glacial geophysics and geotechnical engineering (why frozen ground moves faster during climate warming and how this affects infrastructure). Duncan lives in the hills outside Manchester with his wife and three children. He is a mountaineer, fell runner and is a card-carrying member of the CAMpaign for Real Ale.
