Integration in Exploration and Exploitation

Wednesday, January 21, 2009
The Geological Society

In deciding on the theme Integration in Exploration and Exploitation for the second Forum, we were motivated by the thought that success in the oil & gas business depends on combining the contributions of many disciplines, many specialisms – both technical and non-technical. And then, as we networked with colleagues about this topic, we got an interesting response along the lines of “Ah Yes, Teamwork is very important!”

Well, we don’t know about you but we’ve lost count of the number of team building courses we’ve been on……with the result that we’re now amateur psychologists, we can get a group of people across a river using an oil-drum and two sticks, we can argue the relative merits of Rugby, Soccer and American Football as team sports and we can evaluate potential recruits on their ‘team player’ potential!

And yet!

Our observation is that teamwork and integration work best when highly skilled individuals, from different disciplines, with different specialisms, are all looking
at the same thing
whether that’s a stack of maps on a light-table, a spreadsheet, a cross-section, a shared earth model or a 3D display in a visualization environment.

Thus it was no surprise that the six presentations at the second Forum – under the banner Integration in Exploration and Exploitation – majored on
how we combine, display, visualize and ultimately understand data from a variety of diverse sources:

  • ArkEx (Mark Davies): “When seismic fails - Expanding foothills exploration in the Rocky Mountains”
  • Exprodat (Gareth Smith): “Spatial integration at play level”
  • Hannon Westwood (Jim Hannon): “An Integrated Approach to Corporate Valuations through the Application of G-Profile Processes”
  • RPS Energy (Mike Blakemore): “Multidisciplinary decision-making in Exploration & Exploitation”
  • Ikon Science (David Gawith): “Updating the shared earth model to a live earth model”
  • Dynamic Graphics (Jane Wheelwright): “Better Reservoir Management through 4D visual data fusion”.

Overall, we think this Forum was a great success and that the six presenting companies showed themselves to be at the leading edge of the field – certainly the feedback we have from our audience suggests that.

However, don’t rely on our opinion or theirs! You can judge for yourself by viewing the six videos here!
