What happens when the oil and gas industry gets involved in gas power generation?

Shell is quite strongly involved in different aspects of gas power generation around the world - although not many oil companies are.

Here are some ideas we had.

1) Operating gas power generation plants and selling electricity seems a pretty good fit with oil and gas companies' skill sets, and keeps them closer to the end customers - if o+g companies operate petrol stations, why not gas power generating plants

2) The power demand can be connected directly to gas production - so gas is only produced from the ground when there is a demand for the electricity. This removes the need for intermediate storage tanks, or complex (and sometimes wasteful) contracting arrangements such as "take or pay" between the o+g company and power generating company.

3) O+g companies can connect carbon capture to gas power generation and offer zero emission power - and thus demand the same (generous) rights to sell power to the grid as renewable energy companies have

4) O+g companies can provide electricity to places which could use far more of it than they do (for example across Africa). Currently there are gas reserves. Perhaps there is a chicken and egg problem - o+g companies won't develop the gas because they don't see a market, and gas power companies won't build gas power generation because there is no gas?
