Most digital technology is designed to do a certain task - such as analyse or manage data, or give people tools to design or model something.

But most oil and gas industry people do much more than specific tasks or act on the receiving end of a stream of data - they need to understand a complex changing situation and make decisions.

This applies to experts across the industry - including explorers, drillers, project managers, financial planners, and definitely operations people of all kinds.

This event looks at how digital technology can be better designed specifically around the needs of its users, which are probably better referred to as its customers.

They important step could be called modelling - the process of understanding exactly how someone works, what information they need and at what time, and then building the digital technology to deliver this.

Although the event will include reports from specific domains within our industry (drilling, safety management and equipment management), the ideas and concepts are relevant to all sectors of upstream oil and gas, including exploration, finance and other areas of operations.

Further discussion on the subject is in the Dec 2018 issue of Petromall Insights

Developing software that understands the real world

Talk Description
- Software today is mostly geared towards developing quick and cost efficient solutions
- Less attention is given to teaching computers about the world they will be operating in
- But for software to be useful to expert workers - such as geologists, drilling engineers, production engineers, facilities engineers - the software needs to understand the world they work in

Ulysses Systems is a software company specializing in the delivery of actionable information.

Providing experts with an integrated view of safety data from all sources: sensors, software and qualitative factors

Talk Description

  • Safety managers need to ensure safety barriers are intact – but a safety barrier is just a concept made up of processes, sensors and alerts, not a real thing.
  • How to provide expert safety managers with a single view of the safety situation, which they can use to drill down and find what they need

Show me something I don't already know: Making Oil and Gas technical information more engaging during search for subject matter experts.

Talk Description

  • Share results of research with over 50 petroleum engineers in 30 organizations using the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) content. What algorithms and visual analytics showed a greater propensity to suggest the unexpected, insightful and valuable?
  • Discuss various techniques which could nudge search tools from just time savers - meeting an existing need - to creative 'assistants'; stimulating new needs.

Software to help experts diagnose condition, maintain reliability and plan maintenance of drilling and subsea equipment

Talk Description
-Specific design to support condition /predictive maintenance experts to perform daily tasks
-Enabling maintenance & reliability engineers to properly diagnose condition and predict Remaining Useful Life (RUL)
-Systematizing available, often variable and limited information for evaluation of equipment recertification based on condition, optimisation of overhauls or further diagnostics
- Extracting relevant data & information from maintenance management systems and/or other sources to help plan and complete the task, according to resource availability and existing rules and requirements
