How to digitalise exploration and operations

ML on satellite imagery, warning equipment failure, supply chain digital tech, information overload 0

Wednesday, November 13, 2019, London, The Geological Society

No oil and gas company is satisfied with the level of digitalisation in their exploration and operations – but figuring out how to move further is extremely hard. There are a few stories around from oil majors about how they have invested big in advanced technologies like AI and seen big results.

But do the results actually come from the advanced technologies – or from doing digitalisation in the way that people always said it should be done, but wasn’t done until now – ie getting the basics of data management and technology implementation right?

Oil and gas companies are saying they are keen to bring more digitalisation into their exploration. This forum explores better ways it can be done.

Dave Camden - IM Consultant - Flare Solutions Limited

Case study: How can Digital Transformation approaches help me handle information overload?

Talk Description.
A multinational integrated oil and gas company and one of the seven "Supermajor" oil company in this acquired a large oil and gas company to strengthen its portfolio in a number of geographies. As a result of the acquisition, an entire oil company’s 4 Pb data set, amounting to more than 300M files, needed to be quickly and efficiently absorbed and integrated.

This case study shows how the organisation absorbed a vast amount of content and deployed content clean-up, classification and analytics techniques to deliver relevant content to support the technical project teams.

Flare was engaged to assist with the effort by leveraging a number of proprietary techniques to understand what was in the data set, define how it should be handled, and develop a go- forward strategy.

The presentation will provide an overview of the challenges addressed in handling such a huge influx of data, documents and other content, residing in non-connected infrastructures within a limited time frame, while maintaining business as usual.

Dave started in the oil business in 1976 as a field engineer in the Middle East. In 1982 he joined BG as a petrophysicist supporting the global exploration teams, going on to become their petroleum engineering manager. After BG there was a short period in IBM before Dave and a number of colleagues started Flare in 1998. Since then he has worked with many oil and service companies and government bodies, helping them manage a wide range of E&P information and data.
When not working Dave gets as far away from computer screens as he can by hiking in mountains and spending time in his garden

Daniel Clarke - Business Development Director - Dataco

Data Science and Analytics - UKCS

Talk Description.
The real-world application of Machine and Deep Learning techniques within the E&P industry is hampered by the nature of the legacy data.

The UKCS is a mature basin and the existing data reflect the range of technologies, techniques and data formats. Historically weaker governmental legislation on data storage and retention has led to unprecedented data challenges, particularly relevant in the preparation and conditioning of data for applying Data Science methodologies which are very much on-trend across the sector.

In partnership with the UK OGTC, DataCo has collaborated with the top 10 acreage holders in the UK Northern North Sea, the UK OGA, the Norwegian NPD and two Data Science partners to act as the catalyst in the preparation of legacy data for the identification of zones of overlooked missed pay. DataCo’s preparation of 500 wells consisting of more than 9000 wellbores, using machine learning, big data technologies and cloud computing, will make available a machine-readable, data science ready, data-set consisting of Automatically Spliced JWLs from more than 2,000,000 individual files and conditioned Deviation Surveys, Well Headers, Well Formation Tops, CCC and RCA data.
