Developments with the digital oilfield

Learn about the latest exciting technology which can make the digital oilfield work

Organised by Digital Energy Journal

Thursday, December 01, 2011, London, Hallam Conference Centre

Our 1 day conference 'Developments with the digital oilfield' in London on Dec 1 is about the latest exciting technology which can make digital oilfield work - integrating field operations in subsurface, drilling and production, and improving efficiency and safety

- How highperformance data management tools can help everyone in your oil company get a much better and faster understanding of what is going on, including exploration, project management, reservoir simulation and production optimisation, management tools, dashboards and reporting

- How to make the most of the industry's experience with digital oilfield so far - overcoming resistance to change

- Providing geophysicists and geologists with access to their subsurface models onto the laptops or desk computers, with everything hosted via the cloud

- How do reduce the amount of complex information drilling crew need to process, in order to make a decision like whether to press the button now - the person still makes the decision but the computer makes it easier

- Supporting drilling operations with cloud software tools, which process the drilling data on shore to give people better advice about what is happening

- Using WITSML to gather data from different service providers on the rig, gathering all of the data together in one place

- Make the most of your VSAT bandwidth with new techniques, to make sure you get value out of every kilobit per second available to you

This conference is designed for everyone who works with digital oilfield technology - whether specifying it, using it, deploying it, developing it or supplying it - who needs to keep up to date with the latest industry developments.

Gathering data from the wellsite using WITSML

Talk Description.
This talk will focus on how an operator can gather different real-time data types together using the WITSML data standard and making it available to engineering applications both at the wellsite and at the office.

There has been a recent rapid increase in the capture and transmission of real-time data and most operators now require an integrated service that includes the provision of internal or externally hosted real-time operations centres (RTOC).

Historically real-time data has been managed by individual data acquisition service companies who have provided access to real-time plots through their own RTOCs. Typically these might include drilling parameters, mud rheology, mudlogging and measurement-while-drilling parameters, all of which might be transferred in real-time data through separate bespoke systems over a common satellite or other low bandwidth satellite communications link.

On occasions an operator may also request one of the service companies to act as 'aggregators' of other real-time data, which can cause problems as those other companies are usually competitors and there is then an inherent conflict of interest. In addition there are networking issues as the different service companies and the operator wish to separate their networks for security purposes.

This talk explains how it is possible for an independent company to gather together all of the data sources together, eliminating these concerns.

By using the WITSML Standards and providing full Client/Server capability in specially designed data acquisition (DAQ) systems at the wellsite the potential for a 'Digital Rig' can finally be realised.

Glenn Mansfield - director - Flare Solutions Limited

Rules based information management: our experience getting people in oil companies to follow the rules

Talk Description.
In this presentation, we look at the deployment of rules within an organisation. Just what are the rules and who defines them? How can the rules be maintained? And how can you encourage people to use them?

This last element is critical to the success of any system in which rules are defined and need to be followed. At times it is easier than others, but in a complex environment such as the oil and gas industry, is there anything that can help to define, maintain and ensure compliance with the rules?

The case studies presented are from a company that recently developed a Drilling Management System using the Flare application suite, and subsequently has used the same approach for their Corporate Responsibility System.

Glenn has worked in the oil and gas industry since 1987, and now provides consulting services through Flare Solutions. Flare’s focus is Information Management for Oil and Gas.

Glenn has worked on a wide range of projects providing information management strategy, knowledge management, procedures and standards development, change management and solution deployment to an international client base. Glenn's original discipline experience was in petroleum engineering and production operations, and he was also heavily involved in corporate database systems whilst working in BG E&P. He worked for IBM before co-founding Flare Solutions Limited in 1998.

Specialities: Information management in Oil and Gas, Solutions deployment, Knowledge Management, Taxonomy development, Bespoke product development

Glenn has a B. Eng. in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.

Flare Solutions Limited
Flare Solutions has been involved in information management projects with oil and gas companies since 1998. Projects have ranged from the development of IM strategies to product development and deployment. Flare has also been heavily involved in the development of industry standards such as the Practical Well Log Standards (PWLS) and the E&P Cataloguing Standards (EPICAT) with Energistics.

Flare has developed an application suite that originally provided search and discovery functionality, but, over time, has evolved into a more operational and collaborative toolkit. The toolkit includes the E&P Catalog, EPCat-Tracker and the Flare Oil and Gas Taxonomies.

Real-time collaboration with nuVa for the digital oilfield

cereno, a specialist in communications, business conferencing and advanced collaboration technologies, is delighted to offer its flagship collaboration technology solution nuVa.

Collaborative working is essential in today's business world to ensure rapid flow of ideas and understanding. The traditional meeting is time-consuming, expensive, and is fast becoming environmentally unacceptable.

cereno's nuVa collaboration solution builds on people's natural way of working. nuVa's high quality audio/video communications and intuitive shared workspace allow multiple users to work together on documents and applications in real-time, irrespective of their geographical location. It incorporates a familiar pen interface for annotating and a standard keyboard for typing.

nuVa can also be used over Inmarsat BGAN and bandwidths as low as 64kbps for multi-party secure collaborations. In remote or hostile environments e.g. on an offshore oil platform, often the operations are highly complex. If the technology fails, costs may be incredibly high. nuVa helps to identify the issue far more quickly and accurately through its unique collaboration environment. Experts located globally can be connected using nuVa to fix and make decisions about a high cost problem, providing a ROI in hours.
